..Graun was not the only composer to set Rimmler's text? Within weeks of the original performance, Telemann's version received its first performance.

But while Graun's work continued to thrive throughout the 19th century, Telemann's disappeared after 1807 and wasn' t revived until the 20th century.

Annual Good Friday concert, “Promise of the Passion: Music for Good Friday”,  in conjunction with the Calvary Presents... Concert series, April 6, 2012, at 7:30 pm, in the historic sanctuary of the  Calvary Baptist Church, 755 8th St. NW, Washington, DC  20001, the 6th offering in the Music for Good Friday series and another event in the Calvary Baptist Church 150th Anniversary Celebration. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the historic sanctuary of the Calvary Baptist Church, 755 8th St. NW, Washington, DC 20001.

This year’s concert offers a rare performance of Der Tod Jesu (The Death of Jesus) with music by Carl Heinrich Graun (1704-1759) and the famous text of Karl Wilhelm Ramler (1725-1798), for SATB ensemble and chamber orchestra. First performed in 1703 at the cathedral of the Hapsburg court in Berlin, the work was offered there each Good Friday there until its last performance in 1894.

The Calvary Chamber Singers (Natalie Barrens, Soprano; Susan Sevier, Mezzo-Contralto; Dwayne Pinkney, Tenor; and Rameen Chaharbaghi, Baritone) will perform as in Graun’s day, singing both solo sections and all chorales and choral parts, assisted by the Chalice Singers and accompanied by the Chalice Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Cheryl Branham. at the Calvary Baptist Church in downtown Washington, DC. All proceeds benefit the Shalom Scholarship fund, which supports the education of young students in El Salvador. For more information, click here.
